RIDING WELL
Motorcycle Rider Challenge Course (MRC)
We see it all the time in Okanagan traffic: licensed, experienced, or well experienced, riders committing fundamental riding or traffic errors that put themselves and their passengers at risk. Or new riders, attempting the road test for the first time, and failing due to an accumulation of relatively minor, but collectively significant errors. It isn't that they are "bad" riders, but frequently they don't know, or haven't practiced, the skills that result in people riding well.
Basic riding skills like clutch/throttle coordination, steering and balance, or brake control, if not properly learned and practiced can result in running wide in curves or corners, instability at low speeds, locking of wheels on braking, and incidents that damage your motorcycle, yourself, or your passenger. Traffic skills as well, such as lane selection, position within the lane, implementing a driving strategy, conspicuity, communication, and riding in groups, all need to be learned and implemented to protect your ass-ets.
We have found, over a couple of decades of working with licensed riders, that people with some experience can learn the skills very quickly, when working with an experienced instructor. Even new riders, preparing for their first Class 6 Road Test, can learn quickly by being shown the best or expected way to ride and deal with traffic.
We offer several options for those that want to become better riders. There are custom courses for small groups or clubs. Groups of four to six riders can receive instruction in the community of their choice. Private lessons can be tailored to specific skills, riders, or traffic environments. Road test preparation can be delivered in the community where you are taking your test. Or, consider signing up for a Motorcycle Rider Challenge course, held every spring in Penticton, Kelowna, or Vernon.
At V-Twin, the owner, manager, administrator, even the web site designer - all are riders who want to improve your enjoyment of the sport, and that comes from riding well. Come ride with us, and if you already ride well, consider becoming an instructor and joining us.
